Laughing Gas

NitrousIt is estimated that 75% of U.S. adults experience fear of dental appointments. Many of those blame a bad dental experience in childhood. This is one reason why choosing a pediatric dental office for your child is preferred.

Most children are calm, comfortable and confident in a pediatric dental office because they are designed specifically for young people. Pediatric dentists have additional training in caring for children of all ages and minimizing their anxiety. Yet some children may experience some level of anxiety at their dental appointment.

One option to minimize stress during a child’s dental treatment is to administer nitrous oxide/oxygen, sometimes called “laughing gas”. This is a very safe sedative gas that is breathed in through the nose. It produces a feeling of well-being and relaxation. If your child is worried about dental treatment, “laughing gas” may help give them a positive experience.

Your pediatric dentist will review your child’s medical history, level of anxiety, and treatment needs to determine if “nitrous oxide/oxygen” is a good choice for your child. Inform your pediatric dentist about any and all health concerns for your child. Pediatric dentists have comprehensive training in many sedation methods for children and can offer the method best for your child. This can reduce the parent’s anxiety as well!
